  4. the short-story collections The Trembling of

  6. Lady Frederick 1907 and Our Betters 1923.
  7. Born in Paris, he studied medicine at St
  8. Thomas's, London. During World War I he was a
  9. secret agent in Russia; his Ashenden spy
  10. stories are based on this experience.
